The painter Engels, friend of the studio, is featured in the show “Haiti in the Collective Imagination” at the Gallatin Galleries in Manhattan. Opening reception is Monday, February 14 at 6:30pm, 1 Washington Place, Main Floor. His rich work, which is usually called “painting,” refuses to be constrained by that narrow label. Layers of paint combine with photo fragments, shards of found material, and graceful drawn lines, bursting from eviscerated frames. We designed a catalog for Engels in 2008.
